With "After Dark in Shizumi", Lawrence English momentarily suspends the present pandemic situation by navigating back to a safe place of fond memories, translated into this field recording session conducted in a rice field on the outskirts of Shizumi, Japan. His sound piece captures the unexpected collision of sound worlds that emerges from the transition and/or juxtaposition between urban, suburban and rural scapes.

In his own words: "The transition between these environments can be radical, with suburbs giving way to rice paddocks within a block. These rural micro environments create a very unique situation where, during certain times of the year, an unexpected chorus of life emerges from these spaces. (...) Shizumi is a small town, a mix of suburbs, small business and small lot agriculture. In the summer, as the rice is coming into fruition, there is a gradual tide of sounds that converge in and around these fields. (...) The long flat plains, with slightly raised banks generate a very particular sonic effect, a kind of reflective container that creates unexpected echoes and sonic returns, (...) marking out the boundaries of a field that remains hidden in the blanket of the night."

Magic in its purest form. I love Floating Points, I love Pharoah Sanders, I love The London Symphony Orchestra. It's a match made in heaven, and the result is absolutely gorgeous.
