about

“During this pandemic we seem to live in the illusion of a suspended time, both those who are staying at home in lockdown and those who go out to work or for school. Independently of the degree of activity, the sensation of waiting seems to persist. While memories turn towards a pre-pandemic past and all expectations focus on a virus-free future, the present happens. Our chronologies are not stopped.

Home alone, my days are filled with several sonic and musical activities. While I wait, while I remember and dream, I develop myself within a daily routine that allows me to create and to think about what I’m creating in the present, what I’ve created in the past and what I want to create in the future.

As a response to the invitation to participate in this sound works collection, I remembered a sound piece that was built upon an idea of “timeless time” and of an “untraceable landscape”, mixing up chronological and geographical references, on one hand, and imposing a sole possibility, on the other: infinity, immutability, intangibility.

‘Mosso, poco mosso, quasi calmo’ combines field recordings developed in a former cinema in the South of Italy, with its back facing the Mediterranean. While the drone resulting from the activation of cymbals seems to reinforce the presence of pas, present and future, simultaneously, the sounds which permeate the percussive performance constitute the memory of a specific time and place: that present which was already future and is now past."

lyrics

My experiments with cymbals were recorded by John Grzinich with microphones that he built himself and the sound edition is my own.
