Friends in life and work, Filipe Fernandes and João Grilo debuted as a duo in 2016, having performed together at destinations such as Porto, Gothenburg or Oslo. With their roots linked to jazz and contemporary composition, they playfully combine influences such as Olivier Messiaen, Ryoji Ikeda, Tigran Hamasyan and ping-pong. Bouncing between gentle and disturbing timbral explorations, their music will surely deceive any listener who insists on tapping to the beat, while simultaneously revealing a deep and engaging sense of rhythm.

Although I had already witnessed João’s staggering piano skills at the live presentation of his debut solo album O Grilo e a Longifolia, in 2016, no one could be equipped to deal with what was coming our way when Probióticos joined us for a short arts residency at VIC in late 2019. After a few days of jamming, composing and rehearsing, the duo remarkably paved the way for a talk and reading by Portuguese poet Maria do Rosário Pedreira with what turned out to be one of my favourite live electronic music performances ever. Something tells me that we’ll be hearing from them soon.
